Engineering & Design

At Smyth Steel, our unwavering commitment to engineering excellence comes from our team of Chartered Engineers with many decades’ experience in all aspects of structural steel design, detailing, fabrication and erection, in the UK and Internationally.

Employing advanced tools such as Tekla Structures software, a powerful Building Information Modelling (BIM) solution designed specifically for the construction industry, and Strumis, a comprehensive steel fabrication management software program, we can meticulously detail both 2D and 3D models that underpin the complete design and fabrication process.

Our design expertise includes all forms of steel to steel and steel to concrete connections, using industry best practice from BCSA/SCI guidance, and bespoke solutions for complex and non-routine situations, based on advanced, non-linear finite element techniques. Our experience extends to Eurocode, AISC and NORSOK design standards.

Smyth Steel draws its strength from a range of cutting-edge machinery that drives our commitment to innovation and quality. Our machinery line-up includes:

Smyth Steel maintains its standing as a respected fabricator of structural steelwork for the construction sector. We are qualified to supply CE Marked structural steelwork in all Execution Classes up to and including Execution Class 4 as defined by BS EN 1090-2.

Each steel component that passes through our facility is produced to the highest level of accuracy and quality, resulting in components that fit seamlessly into the final framework on site. Our highly skilled and experienced team includes fully coded welders who manufacture these components in full compliance with qualified procedures, contributing to structures which meet UK and International standards.

Surface Preparation & Coatings

At Smyth Steel we offer the application of a full range of coating systems to protect against corrosion and, where specified, fire. Our approach to any coatings system begins with comprehensive surface preparation, utilising a range of blast media in both manual and automatic processes. Our team have extensive experience in the application of:

  • Alkyd, Epoxy and Zinc primers in 1K and 2K formats
  • Polyurethane and Polyaspartic and Acrylic top coats
  • Cellulosic Intumescent Coatings – water based and solvent borne

We partner with leading manufacturers to provide tailored solutions for protective coatings for corrosion classes C1-C5M and fire protection up to 120-minute fire rating.

Onsite Erection Capabilities

Smyth Steel leverages long established relationships with trusted, experienced and suitably qualified sub-contract partners to deliver onsite erection and coatings, both locally within Northern Ireland and further afield.

In selecting our erection partner for a given project we consider specific technical requirements such as the need for BCSA Bolting Coordination, site welding, or special lifting and/or temporary stability provision.

The priority for us is to ensure that the same high standards of quality, safety and compliance with project requirements are extended across all of our site activities.

Our skilled and experienced site management and erection teams are fully equipped and trained to execute all projects on time, to the highest of quality and with strict adherence to all safety standards.

We can offer additional onsite services to assist our clients with elements such as metal decking and precast units/staircases, including supply and fit or place only solutions.
